UK to Ban “Rough Sex Defense”
The United Kingdom will ban rough sex as a defense for the death of a sexual partner as part of new domestic abuse legislation. A recent high profile case of Grace Millane, a British backpacker killed in New Zealand featured this defense. The defense attorney for her killer argued that the cause of death was BDSM sex gone wrong. This defense has been used in the case of more than 60 deaths of women in the UK according to campaign group We Can’t Consent To This.
While the ban has not gone into place yet, it has been proposed as an amendment to current legislation being considered by Parliament.
Of note, the killer in the case was convicted in New Zealand and sentenced to prison.
