New Zealand Professor Resigns After Inappropriate Shibari Rope Bondage Conversations

Let’s be clear, Professor Nigel Hemmington, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research, Enterprise, and International for Auckland University of Technology (AUT) in New Zealand resigned for having consistent inappropriate sexual conversations in the workplace. But his sexy talk of choice was to over-share with his colleagues about his love of Shibari rope bondage and even show off pictures.

One staff member says that these conversations were a daily occurrence. A formal complaint was filed with AUT in 2019 but not acted on until recently after the complainant no longer worked for the institution.

Professor Hemmington’s resignation is the second among the AUT faculty for allegations of inappropriate behavior to occur within a few weeks. Dr. Max Abbott resigned from AUT less than a month ago, following claims of sexual harassment and stalking. Dr. Abbott first lost his position as Dean of the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences Professor but was still allowed to teach at AUT before resigning fully three weeks later.
