Condoms as Art Sold for More Than $5000

As part of a fundraising project for the New York City AIDS Memorial, a jar of condoms was sold for $5,170 through Avant Arte. Visual artist Jenny Holzer, who’s created art for the New York City AIDS Memorial in the past, had her own words and those of Walt Whitman’s printed on the condom wrappers.

This element of the project is titled URGE AND URGE AND URGE. The specially wrapped condoms were placed inside a handblown pharmacy jar. Text on the wrappers included “Protect me from what I want” and “I will see you again.” Twenty-five editions were made for the project and all have sold online, although a waitlist is available.

As part of the campaign, the text on the condom wrappers was also displayed in LED lights on a truck that drove through parts of New York City that are historically significant. The New York City AIDS Memorial began in 2016 when it was unveiled on World AIDS Day in 2016 at a public ceremony.
