BDSM Clubs Can Open in Berlin

BDSM Clubs Can Open in Berlin

Berlin previously closed all sex-related businesses — brothels and BDSM clubs — to help slow down the transmission of coronavirus in the city. A German court recently ruled that BDSM clubs and dungeons may re-open — as long as everyone wears a mask and follows government recommendations.

Brothels are still not allowed to open in Berlin. And that’s after sex workers staged a protest in June after other entertainment businesses were allowed to re-open. So why the BDSM club but not the brothel?

A spokesperson for the BDSM club says, “The service is strictly limited to contact by hand, ensuring greater distancing as a rule.” Within specific rules set by a BDSM dungeon, this can be quite true. Although, it’s important to know that some BDSM clubs have allowed sexual contact in the past (pre-pandemic). The reason for the continuing closure of brothels in Berlin? Sex involves “dramatically elevated breathing rate” which can more easily spread COVID-19.

While some accommodations can clearly be made for safer sex experiences, if “glory hole” recommendations from Canada and New York health departments is any indication, it seems Berlin isn’t willing to let brothels and customers take the risk just yet.

Since the start of the pandemic, nearly 207,000 Germans have been diagnosed with coronavirus, and more than 9,100 have died.
